The volume originates from two sections organized within the 4th edition of the National Congress of Romanian Historians (Chișinău-Suceava, August 28-31, 2024): University Studies and Social Mobility (1919-2020) (moderator Bogdan Murgescu) and The University System in Romania – from Contraction to Expansion (1980-2000) (moderator Matei Gheboianu). We aim to bring together the concern for the analysis of social mobility with the results of research on access to university studies and, at the same time, to indicate some directions to be deepened in the future. The analysis starts from the premise that in Romania, as in other countries, university studies represented a factor that favored social mobility and the ascendancy of graduates; In the mirror, the inability to accumulate educational capital represented a major risk of downward mobility for young people who failed to enter college or successfully complete their university studies and who could not compensate for this deficiency through other forms of capital.
