In the unprecedented context of the technological revolution in Geography and Earth Sciences, in general, digital photogrammetry is among the most advanced instruments for measuring the terrestrial surface at a detailed scale, but also in a means of producing updated geospatial information. In addition to the accuracy of the data that involves the differentiation of natural and anthropogenic elements in the digital models recognized in the literature, the precision of their representation in two- or three-dimensional virtual spaces becomes an essential characteristic to which the topology of geographic data is obviously related.
Although it is an older technical field, defined now for more than a century, in its current meaning, that of aerial photogrammetry (the use of aerial images and later of satellite images with known geometry in the topographic survey of the land and in the production of topographic plans and maps), it can already be stated that the achievements of the previous stages (analytical photogrammetry) have already passed in their entirety into the digital environment.
This work is a first in our specialized literature and, in particular, in Romanian geographical literature, marking for the first time the broad opening with obvious scientific and technical bases of digital photogrammetry techniques to the field of geography.
Conceived in an accessible format, by logically ordering the issues, from the theoretical to the technical basis and then to the characteristic stages of an advanced photogrammetric flow of processing and generation of basic products (photogrammetric block, digital terrain models and orthoimages), the work has a technological component obviously and innovatively intertwined with the geographical one.
(…) Through the accessible, innovative and open way of integrating technical elements (the basics of photogrammetry) and technological (computer science), with scientific (mathematical) ones, but also through the links with applications specific to geography, the work presents an obvious methodological character, with great utility in the knowledge of digital photogrammetry and specific products, respectively of current performances in the field.
