The work of elena Emilia Stefan, conceived in two parts, proposes an analysis of the social impact of earthquakes in the Roman Empire, between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. In the first part, we investigate the relationship between earthquakes and landscape, as revealed by ancient sources. The production of earthquakes, agents of the instability of the oikeumene in a world described as ordered and perfect, had as a consequence a sharpening of the perception of the landscape, giving rise to reflections on the transformations that natural phenomena cause on the environment. A series of specific observations demonstrate the community’s anxiety in the face of disruptions to the hydrological regime, as well as to the morphology of major landforms. Assessments of the effects of earthquakes on the anthropogenic landscape – urban centers and, to a lesser extent, rural territories – highlight the idea of serious disorganization of the community, which, in order to restore itself, requires external support, both human and divine.
