This volume is the result of the interdisciplinary research project The oldest Romanian manuscript and printed versions of the Akathist Hymn (17th century). The history of a liturgical writing between text and image (AKATHYMN). Dedicated to the beginnings of the Romanian tradition of the Akathist Hymn, the work fills a gap in local research, given that the Romanian history of this text, which occupied a central position in Byzantine theology and which continues to shape Orthodox religious literature and spirituality to this day, was little known before the AKATHYMN project began.
The book includes the editions of the five oldest Romanian redactions of the Anthem, as well as a Slavonic version produced in Wallachia, all dating from the 17th century. The chapters preceding the text editions describe the contexts in which the respective redactions were translated, copied and printed, identify those involved in their production and highlight the dynamics of the Anthem, related to the use of multiple sources, repeated reformulations, its circulation in different geographical areas, but also its use in diverse contexts, both public and private.
