The volume Syntactic Variation in Contemporary Romanian, the result of a research project recently carried out by the team of grammarians from the Institute of Linguistics of the Romanian Academy “Iorgu Iordan – Al. Rosetti” and from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Bucharest, under the coordination of Gabriela Pană Dindelegan, follows the dynamics of syntactic structures, intensively exploiting quantitative and qualitative data obtained through the use of contemporary language corpora and through linguistic questionnaires.
The book brings together eleven studies through which the authors aimed to subject intuitions regarding the direction or pace of change in the syntax of the Romanian language to rigorous verification, to correct statements that have not been revised for a long time, to provide answers to older questions and, above all, to introduce new themes of investigation, on constructions that have not been described from the perspective of their equivalence and concurrency.
The chapters of this book capture the current state of well-known variation phenomena (doubling of the indirect complement, the topic of adverbial clitics, supine – infinitive – subjunctive competition, competition of relative connectors), but also draw attention to less studied topics (infinitive relative, collective noun agreement, the status of nouns with an intensifier role, the extension of constructions with underspecified nominals, competition between comparative connectors). By recording and interpreting recent changes in the Romanian linguistic system, the studies relate variation in use to the explicit or implicit norm. At the same time, the volume demonstrates the importance of an integrative approach, which links syntactic phenomena to morphological changes (for example, to those produced by partially adapted lexical borrowings) and to discursive processes (as in the case of pronominal subject realization, in which the interference between syntactic constraints and pragmatic and discursive factors is manifested).
By combining quantitative and qualitative analyses, with comparative and theoretical interpretations, the volume demonstrates the complexity of the multiple conditionings (morphological, lexical and discursive) of syntactic variation and offers solid material for future grammatical syntheses. Addressed primarily to specialists, the book Syntactic Variation in Contemporary Romanian is a source of new information for all readers interested in the dynamics of the contemporary language.
