Freedom of thought, conscience and religion is a condition of good governance, important for believers and non-believers alike. It is a goal and a criterion of civilization. Why? Development is another name for peace.
Peace is the fruit of justice. Justice is based on respect for fundamental human rights for all. Freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) is a central right. Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is at the heart of all universal human rights. It combines our freedom exercised individually and in community, in the private space and in the public space.
It is also a litmus test for all human rights: if religious freedom is not respected, the other rights will suffer the same fate. Freedom of religion or belief (FoRB1) represents human dignity – the basic principle of human rights. Dignity represents my uniqueness, originality, my rights, but also my duties towards others and the community in which I live.
