We lack the documents on which to begin providing answers and building an argumentative historical narrative regarding what happened in Romanian higher education with the reform implemented in 1948. We need detailed knowledge of what happened to be able to generate in-depth analyses, but everything must be done in stages, and the documents selected in this volume have their role.
This volume introduces into the scientific circuit the documents necessary for this purpose, even if they are only those from the Ministry of Public Education (archival fund no. 3435, with the name Ministry of Religions and Public Instruction, for the period 1947-1949, which can be consulted at the Central National Historical Archives Service). Obviously, the Ministry of Public Education was the essential institution for the higher education system and a lot of relevant documents were identified, enough for us to limit ourselves to them at this stage of research on the education reform. Documents from 1948 and 1949 were consulted and reproduced in this volume, which concern the period immediately preceding (April) Decree 175/1948 (August), and the subsequent one (August 1948-August 1949), therefore with the primary focus on the first academic year after the education reform (1948/1949).
