This volume explores the subjective dimensions of social action from a historical perspective. In a discussion at the intersection of several sciences, historians bring their fundamental methodological contribution, which is that of contextualization, offering apparently universal psychological mechanisms the cultural coloration of various eras and civilizations. Ancient Greece, the Early Chinese Empire, early or most recent modernity, the European Middle Ages are approached through relevant case studies and useful comparisons. Beyond socioeconomic, institutional or political conditioning, the authors revisit cultural contexts and phenomena by questioning emotions, often left aside in historiographical research. From various perspectives and at different levels, the texts included in this volume illustrate the difficulty, but also the utility, of interrogating feelings, psychological inclinations, and intimate experiences, especially in circumstances in which they have produced lasting effects, shaped decisions, identities, and historical developments.
