The volume offers a synchronic and diachronic description of the realization of tense, aspect and modality in English, as well as a comparison with the realization of these categories in Romanian. Thus, the aspectual classes initially defined by Vendler, with subsequent completions and details, as well as the perfective and imperfective grammatical aspect are presented and discussed. Attention is also paid to the category of tense, with deictic or narrative realization, both in English and Romanian. Regarding modality, the volume offers a syntactic, semantic and diachronic perspective on modal auxiliaries in English. The theoretical framework is completed by a corpus of authentic examples, collected from literary and non-literary texts, for some of which one or more alternative translations into Romanian are proposed, with a discussion of translation problems arising from the different realization of the linguistic phenomenon in the two languages.
