This volume of the *Studia Doctoralia* series (no. 7/2024) contains the papers presented during the seventh edition of the National Conference for Doctoral Students in Orthodox Theology, organized by the “Dumitru Stăniloae” Doctoral School of the “Justinian the Patriarch” Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest. The event took place at the “Holy Cross” (*Sfânta Cruce*) Social-Pastoral Center of Caraiman Monastery, in Prahova County, from June 13 to 16, 2024. It brought together professors and doctoral students from various university-level theological institutions across the country, including those in Bucharest, Iași, Sibiu, Craiova, Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, and Alba Iulia.
The conference—organized annually since 2018 by the “Dumitru Stăniloae” Doctoral School, with the support of the Association of Orthodox Theology Students and the University of Bucharest—provided doctoral students with the opportunity to present their research findings on contemporary topics relevant to the Church’s mission in today’s society. The scholarly presentations took place over two days across ten dialogue sessions, moderated by faculty members from various theological institutions in the country. During the subsequent Q&A sessions, the topics presented were explored in greater depth and contextualized for the present day, fostering both critical reflection and academic dialogue.
Special emphasis was placed on the authenticity, integrity, and rigor of theological research. Associate Professor Adrian Lemeni, PhD, Director of the “Dumitru Stăniloae” Doctoral School in Bucharest, underscored that true theological research is edifying insofar as it expresses a living experience; when academic endeavor is integrated with one’s own life, it becomes a pathway toward a spiritual perspective. During the initial sessions, the doctoral candidates successfully demonstrated this connection between research and lived experience. Fr. Professor Nicolae Chifăr, PhD, from the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Sibiu, also commented on the academic and spiritual progress reflected in the presentations; he noted an improvement in the quality of the papers and in the candidates’ ability to deliver their work through a spontaneous, unscripted style, which allows them to present their research and scholarly interests with greater openness. Furthermore, Fr. Professor Vasile Stanciu, PhD, from the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Cluj-Napoca, commended the high level of preparation among the participants and the diversity of the topics addressed, noting that these presentations serve as a testament to the quality of doctoral studies within the Romanian Patriarchate. He also highlighted the predominantly spiritual orientation of the subjects chosen—many of which draw upon the lives of saints (both those formally canonized and contemporary figures) as living models and examples worthy of emulation. The first National Conference for Doctoral Students in Orthodox Theology was organized in 2018; the continued existence of this initiative confirms the need for a shared framework for dialogue, evaluation, and the encouragement of doctoral research in the field of Orthodox theology. This volume aims to provide readers with an accurate reflection of the theological concerns, themes, and perspectives explored during this edition, while also supporting—through publication—the academic and spiritual maturation of the new generation of researchers.
