Conversation is the basis of human interaction and plays an essential role in social life by establishing and maintaining relationships, sharing ideas, opinions and plans. People with speech disorders have a real social communication barrier, thus impacting the individual’s ability to participate in social roles, to use their skills of interaction with others.
Alongside speech therapy, other adjunctive therapies have been implemented, such as social interaction therapy. Interventions focused on language recovery also contribute to stimulating social reintegration, removing barriers that prevent social participation in the contexts in which they live, as well as to raising awareness of the reality of the disease, so that they no longer feel like people affected by a disability. These interventions can be carried out in groups or individually, with patients then practicing alone in their own environment. This way of involving patients directly in social communication can be an adjunct to traditional speech therapy. Studies that have evaluated the effectiveness of therapies based on social interaction have shown that group therapies contribute to improving the communication of patients with speech disorders.
With the help of social reintegration and psychoeducation methods, patients are able to restore interpersonal connections and increase social support.
