The paper deals with the concepts of sustainable development and urban sustainability in Romania from the perspective of urban geography and ecology. Sustainability assessment is a highly topical scientific and practical topic, which predominantly involves the use of sustainability indicators, which are relevant at the global, national and even local levels. They allow the assessment of the state of the planet and the progress of world states, nations or cities in achieving the proposed sustainability targets. The main objectives of the paper are: (1) identifying relevant sustainability indicators for Romanian cities; (2) developing the conceptual and methodological framework for assessing the sustainability of Romanian cities and (3) analyzing the potential for operationalizing the urban development concept through international and local strategies. The paper represents a useful course support for the disciplines Sustainable Management of Human Settlements and National Sustainable Development Strategy (Master in Environmental Policies for Sustainable Development).
