The direct emotional relationship established between the authors of the Roman de Fauvel and their main character is dominated by intense emotions: Gervais de Bus and Chaillou de Pesstain hate Fauvel; they want him dead. The energy that these two 14th-century authors expend in railing against Fauvel could, however, constitute a way of speaking about themselves and thus asserting their authority at the heart of a novel that becomes more an expression of their melancholy than the framework of a narrative.
