TRANSLATION FROM HEBREW,
PRESENTATION AND CRITICAL APPARATUS
The Qumran manuscripts were not immediately recognized as authentic documents. Their existence was too improbable to be accepted without great resistance, even from scholars. Their dating was aided by paleographic parallels, and these created the fertile ground for the development of Qumranology, a discipline that remains strongly influenced by the imaginary of the fragment and typological classification.
The present translation is based on the Hebrew original and is accompanied by the critical philological and historical apparatus necessary for understanding the text. The manuscript entitled Statute of the Community presents the Essene organization at Qumran, with its institutions, values and vision of man.
The importance of the act of textual interpretation, the dialectic between free will and divine determinism, the purity of the intellect associated with the purity of the deed, are just some of the landmarks of communitarian thought reflected in the Statute of the Community.
We thus penetrate the meanders of ancient Judaism in order to discern a complex reality that admits the coexistence of a multitude of currents of philosophical and theological thought.
