Transition is a crucial time in student life, as it can set the stage for a successful academic period and future career achievements. However, for many young people entering higher education, this transition represents an important developmental stage in their journey to adulthood, requiring significant social and emotional adjustment.
MIND THE GAP is the project of the University of Bucharest, in which the specialists of the UB Learning Center propose managing the educational transition from pre-university education to higher education, reducing dropout among undergraduate students and increasing their participation in academic life, by carrying out specific activities that support their development at a personal and academic level and providing tools and ways of supporting learning for UB students, especially those in the first year, in an effort to adapt to the new education cycle and to efficiently integrate new educational experiences.
The approach documented in this collection involves the design and creation of institutional support structures for managing educational transitions in relation to pre-university education and the labor market, through curricular restructuring actions, the development of transversal skills to facilitate the insertion of graduates into the labor market, and through the training of the academic body to support the student learning process in this direction.
The volume Methodology for the Analysis of Transversal Competencies in UB Study Programs is an integral part of the Mind the Gap project initiated by the specialists of the UB Learning Center and represents a logical development of the previous approach to the evaluation of transversal competencies in higher education, with the aim of developing an institutional system for correlating the academic curriculum with the dynamics and requirements of the labor market. This approach requires a flexible and innovation-oriented approach in the teaching and learning process and can lead to the development of more dynamic study programs and the more efficient integration of new technologies and educational practices. This volume integrates two complementary analyses (1) the methodology for the analysis of transversal competencies related to the fields of exact sciences and social sciences and (2) the case studies on the weight and value of transversal competencies in the aforementioned UB study programs.
The development of transversal skills is integrated into the mission and vision of the University of Bucharest, which assumes through different components and activities a special attention paid to specific areas such as: social responsibility, ethics and integrity, communication and collaboration, etc., being further supported by the engagement in the strategic partnership at European level CIVIS (European Civic University). Higher education institutions that adopt an institutional system of correlating the curriculum with the requirements of the labor market can become more competitive at a global level, attracting students and resources from all over the world and strengthening their reputation in the academic and professional environment.
