This volume brings together six studies dedicated to Romanian-German cultural and intellectual relations during the “short twentieth century,” the fruit of a decade of research conducted between 2015 and 2025. Situated at the intersection of cultural history, intellectual history, and the study of transnational transfers, these contributions trace the circulation of ideas, people, and institutions between Romania and Germany, spanning the period from the interwar years through the post-war and communist eras. Ranging from student mobility and cultural diplomacy to the role of Romania’s German minority and the trajectories of intellectuals shaped by the century’s great upheavals, the studies offer fresh perspectives on themes essential to understanding the relationship between these two cultural spheres.
Beyond the analysis of specific cases, the volume proposes a more nuanced interpretation of Romanian-German exchanges, highlighting their reciprocal and complex nature. Romania and its cultural actors appear not merely as recipients of influences from the German sphere, but as active participants in the construction of intellectual and academic networks that transcended borders, political regimes, and historical eras. By gathering texts previously published in journals and volumes both in Romania and abroad—some appearing here in Romanian for the first time—the book serves to both showcase scattered research and deepen the understanding of a significant chapter in twentieth-century European cultural history.
