This volume represents a research on the text of the Mystagogy of Saint Maximus the Confessor, in which essential themes of patristic theology (especially those related to the Chalcedonian heritage) are put in relation to ideas and contexts coming from the philosophical environment of late Antiquity, but also to the fundamental reality of the encounter with God, which the experiential framework of liturgical theology makes accessible to the Christian present at the Liturgy of the Church. The work aims to demonstrate that the liturgical life of the Christian can overcome the impersonal and non-participatory limitation of concepts, including theological ones, among the highest. We can understand our relationship with God at a conceptual level, but we can also rather go along the path of direct experience, not annulling concepts, but overcoming them, through concrete sharing with a present and sacrificial God. The life of the Christian in the Church or the liturgical life can be understood as a continuous Revelation of a God still present in history and in the Church, where He actualizes the wisdom of His Word and His deifying works, through the power of relationship. The main category identified in the Mystagogy of Saint Maximus, proposed as the foundation of Maximian mystagogic theology, is relationship (σχέσις), which he understands both in the dynamics of the mystagogic typologies in the first part of the text, and as the basis of the meaning of the liturgical symbols in the second part. Moreover, the author has the courage to explore the meaning of the relationship between typologies and symbols, proposing the idea that Mystagogy is much more unitary in message and content than was believed until now, and the fact that he makes these explorations of meaning in accordance with the philosophical acquisitions from the formative and spiritual context of Saint Maximus brings even more clarity to the approach.
