TRANSATLANTIC VISTAS. PATTERNS OF PERCEPTION, U.S. – EASTERN EUROPEAN RELATIONS AND COLD WARRADIO BROADCASTING BEYOND THE IRON CURTAIN

As waged through the immaterial medium of radio waevs, but also on U.S. soil, the Cold War triggered a process of sharp self-analysis in America. The discourse transmitted through, and centered on, U.S. broadcasts beamed beyond the Iron Curtain (through Radio Free Europe and Voice of America in particular) constitutes a rich ground for the reflection and refraction of sometimes convergent, sometimes divergent U.S. policies towards Eastern Europe, framed by an ampler Euro-American framework.
The transatlantic vistas that emerge attest to the complexity of cultural communication and complement the understanding of contemporary patterns of representations with an awareness of the intricacies of Cold War relations.
